Why Turn to Counselling?
People seek counselling for various reasons including when they are feeling lonely and isolated, depressed, angry, inadequate, insecure, stressed, anxious or overwhelmed by emotions.
These feelings which affect the quality of relationships, self-esteem and daily life may be related to a personal crisis, a major life change or unresolved issues from the past, a bereavement or loss, the effects of abuse, or perhaps a work or family issue.
‘The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.’
Mark Twain
Counselling can offer an opportunity to:
- Be actively listened to within a psychodynamic framework by a trained counsellor who is not directly involved in your everyday life.
- Explore your fears and anxieties in a non-judgemental environment.
- Understand your present patterns of thinking and behaviour and identify those which may be unhelpful, and how they originated.
- Make sense of your pain and initiate change.
- Evaluate and challenge assumptions and beliefs.
Where might you be at the end of it?
- Feeling less overwhelmed by your feelings and situation.
- In a place with greater freedom of thought and action.
- Aware of a greater autonomy in your life.
- Able to make informed choices and work towards achieving realistic goals.
- Capable of achieving an overall sense of purpose and direction for your life.
- With improved self-esteem and feeling content to be you.
